Vera Drew, The People’s Joker

Char McCutcheon (they/them) is a Canadian-American composer, songwriter, performer, and sound artist based in New York City. Working across indie pop, film scoring, and experimental sound, McCutcheon creates emotionally rich landscapes through sonic storytelling.

In 2023, McCutcheon was selected as a recipient of the Creatives Rebuild New York Guaranteed Income for Artists program. In 2024, they received a Canada Council for the Arts Explore & Create grant for Wordless Writings, a queer, collaborative experimental music and sound project scheduled for release in 2027.

McCutcheon’s interdisciplinary composition work includes two original songs featured in Vera Drew’s award-winning queer satire The People’s Joker; a piano score for the short film Pigs by Ericsson San Pablo Chu; music for the French Yellow Pages (Les Pages Jaunes); and original music for the Philadelphia Fabric Workshop and Museum podcast Halftone. McCutcheon also appeared as lead actor and composed the end-credits music for the short film Mannequin by Lu Fine, which screened at festivals including the San Francisco Transgender Film Festival and TAG! Queer Shorts Festival.

Under the moniker CHAR2D2, McCutcheon released the Small Vampires EP, co-produced by Tegan Quin of Tegan and Sara. The project's lo-fi indie-pop sound and understated emotional resonance drew attention from queer and independent music communities, with AfterEllen describing it as “lo-fi indie pop with guitars, keyboards, and sweet, light vocals.”

Originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, McCutcheon is a founding member of the indie-pop band Bella (Mint Records). They wrote and performed vocals, synth, bass, and acoustic and electric guitar on the acclaimed album No One Will Know, praised for its “dreamy girl-boy-girl vocals, synth hooks, and punchy rhythms” and described by Exclaim! as “futuristic indie pop at its most danceable.” Bella toured throughout Canada and the U.S., sharing stages with The Breeders, Phoenix, Drake, Imperial Teen, and The New Pornographers.

McCutcheon holds a music degree from Briercrest College and works professionally as a composer, piano technician and tuner. Outside of pianos, they enjoy crocheting, bird-watching and spending time with their beloveds, your pets and all of the plants.
